The Tilapia Farm at El Tigre consists of four ponds in which up to 600 fish live and grow. The ponds are built in a terrace formation to allow the water to cycle from the top to the bottom with the help, oxygenating the pools with minimal use of electricity to pumps.
Fresh Food for All
Visitors can fish for their own Tilapia and have it cleaned and cooked on site for a fresh tastely meal. The farm provides food for the community and supplies fresh Tilapia to the local eco-lodges. Using locally produced foods helps the eco-lodges increase their community involvement, support local businesses and reduce the expense and carbon emmisions caused by transporting in food from more distant areas.
Big Dreams for the Future
Future plans include a meat smoker to allow for onsite preparing and packaging of the fish for sale to a areas beyond El Tigre. This will not only bring more revenue to the community but will also expand recognition of El Tigre and all it has to offer.
